Extreme Engineering Solutions Scores Triple-Double with Processor-based Advanced Mezzanine Cards

Extreme Engineering Solutions (X-ES) announces the introduction of three new Advanced Mezzanine Cards at the 2007 AdvancedTCA Summit. For use in both AdvancedTCA and MicroTCA systems, each of the three AMC boards is a single-width, mid-height AMC featuring a high-performance dual-core processor. The XPedite5140 hosts NXP’s (formerly Freescale) MPC8641D, XPedite7040 employs an Intel® Core™2 Duo, while XPedite8040 targets P.A. Semi’s PWRficient™ PA6T-1682M.

Targeted for applications requiring NXP (formerly Freescale) high-performance PowerPC processors, XPedite5140 uses an MPC8641D running two e600 PowerPC cores at up to 1.5 GHz. The card can be configured with up to 4 GB of DDR2 SDRAM and 4 GB of NAND flash. I/O support includes quad Gigabit Ethernet ports, serial ports, and PCI Express. XPedite5140 is an optimal solution for packet-processing and general computing applications that demand high performance.

For applications requiring x86 compatibility, XPedite7040 provides maximum performance and I/O options while minimizing power consumption. The Ultra Low Voltage (ULV) Intel® Core™ Duo processor or Low Voltage (LV) Intel® Core™2 Duo processor provides XPedite7040 with an impressive performance-per-watt processing rating. Additionally, the Intel® 3100 chipset combines the functionalities of an integrated server-class memory controller (Northbridge) and an I/O controller (Southbridge) into a single device that is specifically intended for power- and board-space-sensitive embedded applications.

P.A. Semi’s PA6T-1682M processor has been generating significant interest and excitement in the PowerPC community due to promised performance gains at significantly reduced power consumption. XPedite8040 provides AdvancedTCA and MicroTCA system designers the power savings AND high performance of a dual 2.0 GHz processor. Available with up to 4 GB of DDR2 SDRAM, quad Gigabit Ethernets ports, dual 10 Gigabit XAUI ports, and PCI Express links, the XPedite8040 is unrivaled in features and performance – at half of the AMC specified power budget.

Operating System support from Extreme Engineering for these new AMCs includes; Linux, Wind River VxWorks, Wind River PNE, Green Hills INTEGRITY, and QNX Neutrino.

The introduction of these three cards demonstrates Extreme’s breadth of capabilities and expertise. “We’re not focused on pushing products on customers, but providing customers with the solutions they need,” says Bret Farnum, VP of Sales and Marketing for Extreme. “This results in our diverse portfolio of products for the high-performance embedded computing market.”

Availability. XPedite5140, XPedite7040, and XPedite8040 are shipping and available from $2,000 – $4,000 depending on memory configuration, clock speed, and volume commitments.
